balance your hormones with a handful of seeds

It seems like there’s a pill for everything these days. Ladies – we especially tend to have reasons to run to the medicine cabinet, thanks to our batshit crazy reproductive systems. There is a whole list of complaints that tons of women everywhere share, and it’s always an option to hit up the pharmacy… but there may be a better way.

What I’m talking about is called Seed Cycling. Eating a simple combination of a few popular seeds, is said to actually restore your body to balance. Many of those complaints that I eluded to a second ago – PMS, heavy periods, acne – their core cause is mostly due to our hormones going psycho on us. If we can restore balance to our bodies and regulate those hormones, we will find that all of these annoying symptoms start to subside. And with Seed Cycling, we can do it completely naturally, while simultaneously nourishing our bodies. Also, girls… this isn’t just for the average stuff like PMS – if you are struggling with infertility or PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) this method may help you!

There are four seeds you need to stock up on for this process:

  1. flax seeds
  2. pumpkin seeds
  3. sunflower seeds
  4. sesame seeds

It’s super simple. For days 1-14 of your cycle (the follicular phase), you eat 1 tbsp of flax seeds and 1 tbsp of pumpkin seeds (every day). On days 15-28 (the luteal phase), eat 1 tbsp sunflower seeds and 1 tbsp sesame seeds. Grind your seeds up with your Vitamin, Ninja, your mortar and pestle – whatever you have or can get. There are so many options for adding them into your diet. Throw them in a smoothie, on your salad, in your oatmeal or cereal, over pasta… whatever works. On a side note, make sure you aren’t eating these specific seeds beyond these amounts, on this schedule. If you’re in your luteal phase and you decide to have an afternoon snack of pumpkin seeds, you’re going to confuse your bod and interfere with the process. It’s of course best if your seeds are RAW (not roasted or anything) and Organic. Grind them fresh pretty frequently so you don’t have to worry about them going bad.

If you’re curious as to what the hell these random seeds have to do with your hormones, here’s the deal.

The combination of pumpkin and flax seeds creates a killer detox for extra estrogen, which is commonly produced during this time of month (the follicular phase, days 1-14 of your cycle). Flax seeds have something called lignans (chemical compounds found in plants) that will bind to excess estrogen and help your body get rid of it. Pumpkin seeds have a high zinc level, which prevents your estrogen from turning into harmful forms of testosterone. This will also prep your body for the production of progesterone (a hormone which stimulates & regulates your menstrual cycle and prepares your body for conception & pregnancy) which happens in the second half of your cycle.

The sunflower and sesame combination is also rich in zinc as well as selenium (a mineral with antioxidant properties), which helps progesterone production. These seeds are also a great source of linoleum acid, which is an essential fatty acid that can convert to gamma linolenic acid – AKA an omega-6 fatty acid which maintains the reproductive system and can help the balance between progesterone and estrogen.

In layman’s terms, these four seeds contain all of the right elements to help your body find its flow and become beautifully balanced in the hormone world. Consistency is key and give it time… within a few months you could be feeling the changes.

The magic of this organic remedy has the natural health freak in me beaming. I hope to hear some amazing personal experiences from you!
