lighten up

Our body may be our temple, but our home is our sanctuary. The state of the space that we live in can have profound effects on our physical, mental, and emotional health. So, the more you can do to keep your home clean, organized, cute and comfy; the better.

One of my all-time favorite home accessories is a special kind of lamp. I have four of them right now, and plan on getting more. And more. I’d honestly love one in every room of my house. These things not only give off the warmest vibe and will lift your mood, but can actually purify your air, too.

You may have seen things around about how good it can be for you to eat Himalayan Salt. Well, this special form of salt also makes for a magical lamp. They’re called, you guessed it – Himalayan Salt Lamps.

These things have so much to offer. The special combo of the Himalayan Salt and the light source in these lamps creates negative ions. Negative ions are oxygen atoms charged with an extra electron. They’re typically produced in nature, by things such as sunlight, waterfalls, and lightening storms. There’s a reason why we feel so calm and refreshed when we are at the beach or after a good storm. Negative ions can clear the air of mold spores, dust, odors, pet dander, pollen, cigarette smoke, bacteria and viruses (positively charged particles). Beyond these things, a lot of our common household items like AC, TV’s, dryers, and even carpet and furniture upholstery – are positive ion producing items. ⇐ BAD.

Our homes are usually pretty sealed off from nature’s beneficial negative ions. Even if we have the windows open a lot. And, if you live in a bigger city, your surrounding areas are probably lacking in negative ions anyway.

So what kinds of things can these negative ion producing lamps do for you?

  • Increase your sense of well-being and mental clarity
  • Clear your air of aforementioned pollutants, allergens, etc.
  • Normalize your breathing rate, decrease blood pressure, & relieve tension, with their relaxing effects
  • Improve your energy levels and focus by normalizing serotonin levels in your brain
  • Protect your lungs from irritation & inflammation by improving the function of the cilia in your respiratory tract – leading to less instances of respiratory illness like colds and asthma
  • Help you out with the winter blues or Seasonal Affective Disorder
  • Provide you with elevated mental concentration & performance
  • Reduce instances of headache
  • Help you to sleep better

Need I go on?

FYI, you can also buy different types of negative ion producing machines for your home or office. But these lamps are so beautiful and charming, you will really love having them around. I also think the warm glow that they have only adds to some of those great mental & emotional improvements, which a random machine won’t have.

The lamps come in all different forms, shapes, and sizes. Here’s a link to some results on Amazon, just to give you a quick idea of what some of them look like. Make sure you are definitely getting one that’s a genuine Himalayan Salt Lamp. There are knockoffs.

I have one that has a dimmer on it… I keep it in our bedroom. It makes for an awesome night light for my daughter. I’d highly recommend grabbing one for kids’ rooms! Don’t forget – they can improve sleep.

As you’ll see you can get these for a really reasonable price. If you’re lusting after one of the more expensive ones, keep it in mind for your upcoming birthday or Christmas!

  1. Hi Carolyn,
I really enjoy your blog. I’m gonna share it tonite. I too thought 420 was a hippie thing. We actually took a family vacation from TX to CA in 1969 in search of hippies, my dad. I did know about the Himalayan salt lamps, we have one and bought one for each kid at Christmas. I also heard there are knock offs. My question to you, oh one of knowledge, how do you tell a real from a fake? Good to see you so happy. Take care.

    1. Thank you! I’m glad! From what I have read, there are a few big red flags when dealing with a fake. One main thing to look for first is the salt crystal’s (not the lamp as a whole, but the salt crystals) origin. Real Himalayan pink salt is obtained from the mines of Khewra, Pakistan. Red flags include:
      1) Your lamp is super bright – the light coming from the lamp should be muted and uneven, giving off just a warm glow – because of the medium pink/dark orange color it should have and the various minerals it’s comprised of. If it fully illuminates an entire room, that’s not a good sign.
      2) It handles moisture very well. Real Himalayan pink salt lamps will “sweat” if they’re in a moist atmosphere. You can test it out by playing one by a humidifier. On the one in our bedroom with our humidifier, you can see dried up sweat at the bottom of the lamp.
      3) It’s super durable. Real ones are quite fragile and will chip away if dropped or bumped with a hard object.
      4) The manufacturer or supplier you’re buying from has a poor return policy.
      5) You feel like you aren’t getting anything from the lamp.
Also, if you’ve purchased one of the White Crystal lamps, it should have been very expensive. These ones are rare and have high demand. So if you bought a “White Crystal” salt lamp for super cheap, it’s not really a White Crystal lamp.
